Plan around routines

Start with the activities a room must support. In a kitchen, that means preparation, cooking, cleaning and storage. In a bedroom, movement, wardrobes, charging and lighting matter as much as the bed. In an office, focus, conversation, equipment and visitor flow should be considered together.

Mark the items that need a fixed location and the items that may change. This distinction makes layouts more resilient.

Coordinate hidden services

Switches, sockets, lighting points, plumbing, ventilation and appliance requirements should follow the approved layout. When these are decided late, visible compromises and rework become more likely.

Layer ambient, task and accent lighting instead of asking one fixture to do everything. Consider how the space will look and function during both day and evening use.

Choose materials for real conditions

Evaluate finishes for cleaning, moisture, sunlight, wear and repairability. A material that looks excellent in a sample may not be suitable for every surface or household.

Finally, retain a small contingency for site conditions and necessary changes. Clear drawings, samples and written approvals help everyone understand what is being built.
